BP blames cleanup worker sickness on food poisoning

As if it wasn't already heartbreaking enough that BP's oil spill has destroyed the livelihoods of fishermen throughout the Gulf Coast, those fishermen are now getting sick while cleaning up BP's spill. One of those fishermen began feeling ill a week ago and has been hospitalized since Friday with aches, an upset stomach, and nose bleeds. Others have complained of shortness of breath and dizziness. It's not yet 100% clear what is causing the sickness, but a possible culprit is exposure to dispersants or other chemicals used in the containment operation.

BP, however, is having none of that. CEO Tony Hayward insists that the sickness couldn't possibly have anything to do with the oil spill.

Tony Hayward, the chief executive officer of BP, offered another explanation for the fishermen's illness: spoiled food.

"Food poisoning is clearly a big issue," Hayward said Sunday. "It's something we've got to be very mindful of. It's one of the big issues of keeping the Army operating. You know, the Army marches on their stomachs."

Food poisoning? Seriously? When was the last time you heard of somebody getting a nose bleed from food poisoning? Sadly, it looks like BP has found a new way to drive its credibility even lower.

Here we go, and what will it take for the Government to intervene. For two weeks I've been trying to communicate about the Corexit dispersant.(Both kinds) Even the Mud being used had bad shit in it. Not to mention the Crude itself. These cheap dirty bastards don't even want to make show it's workers have the proper PPE.(Personal Protective Equipment). Food poising my ass, read the MSDS sheets and their symptoms fall in line with the Health Hazards listed. This is what I meant by the Government taking the lead.
Damn it Bevus...

I've got to play devil's advocate here. It's entirely possible for someone suffering gastroenteritis to coincidentally have a nosebleed.

It's also possible for someone whose system is already under stress from toxic fumes to coincidentally come down with viral or bacterial gastroenteritis.

The answer to this, if it can be pinned down for sure, lies in science.

That said, I'm skeptical about how safe breathing the gases and vapors coming off that oily water is, especially once it's been treated with dispersant.

Hayward clearly has reason to deny any connection of fumes from this mess to illnesses, or worse. BP is already on the hook for a whole lot of money. I'm sure he's scared spitless of having to defend a bunch of lawsuits claiming illness or, especially, longterm disability.

You know they by way of their subsidiary own corexit, so they make a profit on that to. This guys claim of food poisoning doesn't hold up. No one gets rashes from food poisoning or nose bleeds. For it to last over a week suggest exposure. You know the thing is their workers could be protected using the proper PPE. They also need a quick training on how to use it. They did the same thing when 911 happened. They just passed out paper mask with no instruction.
Only on this past Saturday did an executive reluctantly agree to start using the respirators. The cost of these things is less than 10.00ea. Crazy huh. I just don't think these guys have a clue. Not that I know everything but my background is as a EHS. Environmental Safety and Health specialist. (Retired)

If the workers are sick from food poisoning then the GOP Gulf Gusher caused my flatulence in 1980.

I was a little under the weather back then, I wonder......

If you were, it was not because of my gas. I'm not paying for it. Stick it to the taxpayers. ;-)
