BP blames cleanup worker sickness on food poisoning
by Jed Lewison
Mon May 31, 2010 at 03:30:04 PM PDT

As if it wasn't already heartbreaking enough that BP's oil spill has destroyed the livelihoods of fishermen throughout the Gulf Coast, those fishermen are now getting sick while cleaning up BP's spill. One of those fishermen began feeling ill a week ago and has been hospitalized since Friday with aches, an upset stomach, and nose bleeds. Others have complained of shortness of breath and dizziness. It's not yet 100% clear what is causing the sickness, but a possible culprit is exposure to dispersants or other chemicals used in the containment operation.

BP, however, is having none of that. CEO Tony Hayward insists that the sickness couldn't possibly have anything to do with the oil spill.

Tony Hayward, the chief executive officer of BP, offered another explanation for the fishermen's illness: spoiled food.

"Food poisoning is clearly a big issue," Hayward said Sunday. "It's something we've got to be very mindful of. It's one of the big issues of keeping the Army operating. You know, the Army marches on their stomachs."

Food poisoning? Seriously? When was the last time you heard of somebody getting a nose bleed from food poisoning? Sadly, it looks like BP has found a new way to drive its credibility even lower.

Here we go, and what will it take for the Government to intervene. For two weeks I've been trying to communicate about the Corexit dispersant.(Both kinds) Even the Mud being used had bad shit in it. Not to mention the Crude itself. These cheap dirty bastards don't even want to make show it's workers have the proper PPE.(Personal Protective Equipment). Food poising my ass, read the MSDS sheets and their symptoms fall in line with the Health Hazards listed. This is what I meant by the Government taking the lead.
Damn it Bevus...

How Big oil conned Obama

This is from the Daily Beast:

The president asked the oil companies for their advice instead of ordering them to stop the spill. Christopher Brownfield on what Obama could learn from Bush and Putin about forceful decisions.

So a law professor, a Nobel Prize winning physicist, and an oil executive walk into a bar…Stop me if you’ve heard this one. It’s the story of President Obama, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, and Big Oil.

On Friday, a host on CNBC and a senior White House official personally reminded me that President Obama consulted with numerous advisers before deciding on his response to the oil spill. These advisers included oil company executives, leaders of environmental agencies, and many scientists—including the Nobel laureate, Dr. Chu.

It would be far better for our president to pick up the red phone and call Vladimir Putin for a lesson on ninjapolitik than to leave BP in charge of the ineffectual plans that it’s bringing to the table.

It was important to bring the environmental agencies to the table so that the White House could mitigate this ecological Chernobyl with a strong, coordinated effort.

It was smart to bring the Secretary of Energy to the table for political and regulatory reasons.

It was right to bring the oil companies to the table, too, because the U.S. government does not possess the oil-related equipment and expertise that countries like Venezuela and Brazil control within their nationalized deep-water oil industries.

But there was one person missing from this A-list of extraordinary advisors: Joe the Plumber. Where was the pragmatic, no-nonsense blue-blooded American who could look President Obama and Chu in the eye and tell them to stop over-thinking this underwater plumbing problem, and furthermore, not to trust BP? Would you send a lawyer and a physicist to fix your plumbing? And would you trust an oil company executive to give you a fair deal?

We should have demolished this well with explosives over a month ago. And yet we watch in excruciating suspense while BP fumbles through plan after plan to recover its oil and cover its asset.

The president has set up an independent commission for investigating the accident before the spill is even stopped. How can we be so far-sighted as to miss the obvious things right before us? Establishing a commission before stopping the spill is like calling an attorney to file a lawsuit the moment after being run over by a truck.

• Big Fat Story: Plug the Spill, Already!

• Reihan Salam: Who Needs an Oil Spill Czar? The oil companies stood together and advised President Obama that BP’s plans for the crisis response were the best of all available options. If this sounds kosher to you, then please contact me and I’ll sell you a bridge in Brooklyn at a very special price. Historically, oil companies are remarkably consistent in supporting each other when the industry is threatened by political forces and a popular backlash. Only on rare occasions are there exceptions to the lock-step unity of petrol power. For example, in the 1950’s, an Italian oil executive named Enrico Mattei broke ranks and decided to undercut the deals that other oil companies enjoyed throughout the Middle East. When Mattei offered his host countries a 50/50 split on the revenues, the oil industry erupted in anger. The 50/50 deals had broad normative appeal that paved the way for other oil-rich countries to demand equal treatment. But fairness can have consequences in a den of thieves; poor Enrico was killed in a mysterious plane crash in 1962. One doesn’t need to be a Nobel laureate to do that math.

The problem with this BP spill response is that President Obama asked the oil companies for their advice instead of ordering them what to do to stop the spill. BP’s response would not look the same if President Obama threatened to nationalize their assets and take charge of the situation. I know that the Bush administration gave aggression a bad name, but sometimes it’s ok to be aggressive. It was a mistake for President Obama to construct a team of advisers so intelligent and accomplished, yet so green with casualty response and so susceptible to oil company coercion. It would be far better for our president to pick up the red phone and call Vladimir Putin for a lesson on ninjapolitik than to leave BP in charge of the ineffectual plans that it’s bringing to the table.

The opportunity is slipping away for President Obama to stop the spill quickly and heroically with a controlled demolition. Let’s take note and try to get this right in the days ahead and the next time a crisis hits.

Christopher Brownfield is a former nuclear submarine officer, an Iraq veteran, and a visiting scholar on nuclear policy at Columbia University. He is the author of My Nuclear Family, to be published by Alfred A. Knopf in September.

A great piece, Since the second week of this bullshit I've been saying blow the prick up. That's how it's done. We did it in Iraq numerous times. The only reason it's not done here is because BP (butt Puckers) don't want to drill a whole new well. At what cost boys.....Fuck the world you just want another buck. Mr.President please look up how to stop gushers. Perhaps BP stands for (better Pay)

Live feed

What's next ??

From the beast

Now that "top kill" efforts are off, BP is on to the next plan of attack: capping the gusher. According to plans, the company will use robot submarines to cut off the damaged riser and then place a cap over the containment valve. The job could take anywhere from four to seven days. “We’re confident the job will work but obviously we can’t guarantee success,” said BP’s COO Doug Suttles. The technique carries the risk, however, of actually increasing the flow of oil. A bend in the riser is said to be restricting oil flow, so slicing it off could make matters worse.

Isn't that special, What the hell let's nuke it for July 4th celebrations. It could be a real hit. A Star studded extravaganza. You know all your favorites, hosted by Jay Leno.
Bring in the Half Beatles, The Stones and of course the Jonas Brothers. The President could speak and even have one of the oil drenched residents of the Gulf push the button.
What a Site it would be. Even Republicans would praise the Commander and Chief. They've wanted to use Nukes for years. An all day celebration, culminating with the giant blast, at night of course. Ahh one for annuals of time, what's left of it.

Thank You

Who Could Have Known... That There Were Safety Concerns With The Deepwater Rig? BP Engineers, That's Who.

Posted: 30 May 2010 07:00 AM PDT

"Who could have known?" I am so sick of that all-purpose excuse, aren't you? Maybe if we passed a law requiring the electric chair for anyone found guilty of major pollution, we could trust these companies to make safety their priority instead of profits:

WASHINGTON — Internal documents from BP show that there were serious problems and safety concerns with the Deepwater Horizon rig far earlier than those the company described to Congress last week.

The problems involved the well casing and the blowout preventer, which are considered critical pieces in the chain of events that led to the disaster on the rig.

The documents show that in March, after several weeks of problems on the rig, BP was struggling with a loss of “well control.” And as far back as 11 months ago, it was concerned about the well casing and the blowout preventer.

On June 22, for example, BP engineers expressed concerns that the metal casing the company wanted to use might collapse under high pressure.

“This would certainly be a worst-case scenario,” Mark E. Hafle, a senior drilling engineer at BP, warned in an internal report. “However, I have seen it happen so know it can occur.”

The company went ahead with the casing, but only after getting special permission from BP colleagues because it violated the company’s safety policies and design standards. The internal reports do not explain why the company allowed for an exception. BP documents released last week to The Times revealed that company officials knew the casing was the riskier of two options.

Though his report indicates that the company was aware of certain risks and that it made the exception, Mr. Hafle, testifying before a panel on Friday in Louisiana about the cause of the rig disaster, rejected the notion that the company had taken risks.

“Nobody believed there was going to be a safety issue,” Mr. Hafle told a six-member panel of Coast Guard and Minerals Management Service officials.

“All the risks had been addressed, all the concerns had been addressed, and we had a model that suggested if executed properly we would have a successful job,” he said.

Okay, here's the thing, Engineers are not Safety People. Sure they have some background in it but their primary concern is getting the job done. Sounds Harsh, but as Engineers they are under a lot of pressure to produce. What Safety People do is like being a Private eye or a undercover agent. They have to ask questions, sample, anaylize
and instruct. How do I know this, It was my life for 20 years. I had to fight Management and yes Engineers on a daily basis. So what I want to know, who was the EHS Manager responsible, at deep Horizons. What is their credentials. Most important is what they can tell of working for BP. As a large part of our World dies, we must find the ROOT CAUSE. The short answer is Money and Greed, I want to know it all and I want justice. Those 11 souls want justice, the Earth wants justice.

This idea is from Cesca's Awesome blog

Drill my Ass/top kill has failed

ROBERT, La. - BP said Saturday that its "top kill" bid to plug the worst oil spill in U.S. history wasn't working and that it would try another approach next.

"We have not been able to stop the flow," BP PLC Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles told reporters.. "We have made the decision to move onto the next option."

A live feed of the leak showed preparations Saturday for BP's next step. An underwater robot gripped a saw near the bent and leaking pipe, or riser, atop a failed blowout preventer. BP aims to slice off the pipe and place a cap and seal over the opening. The idea is to connect that to a new riser from the drillship above, with the hopes of capturing oil and natural gas.

That operation is known as the lower marine riser package, and Suttles confirmed that BP had been preparing for that step "all along."

"We haven't done it to this date because we needed the diagnostic data to make sure we didn't make the situation worse," Suttles said. The new capture approach follows two earlier failed attempts to siphon the oil via a large containment chamber and a smaller "top hat" system.

The new attempt would take four to seven days to complete, Suttles said.

"We're confident the job will work but obviously we can't guarantee success," Suttles said of the new plan.

Suttles added that BP was also preparing to place a working blowout preventer on top of the failed one if the cap option fizzles.

Drilling continues on one of two planned relief wells intended to intercept the leaking well and plug it far beneath the seabed. BP expects the first well to be finished by late July or early August.

BP has said previously the company was "planning in parallel," or getting ready for other options while working on the top kill — the injection of heavy fluid and materials to plug the well.

The disaster entered its 40th day on Saturday. Americans have been hypnotized as they watched for any sign of success.

They are acting like their heroes trying to come with solutions at this tremendous depth. No there not. They are planet killers. I said from the beginning of this that new wells were there real priority. As noted above, completed sometime in July or August. House price along the Gulf are sure to plummet. That's for all you bargain seekers.

Endangered Oil Clean up

Endangered Oil workers cleaning up are in Danger.
Danger from Spill

Not only are workers getting sick but they are showing symptoms of Exposure to the Dispersant being used. If you were to read the MSDS sheets on the corexit(both being used) it would correspond to the symptoms of the sick workers. Listen folks, The people handling this suck. Now there talking of just giving out respirators. Not a mention of what type of respirator, Positive,Negative, powered,or supplied air. Not a mention of what type of filters. And not a damn word about training being done for wearing a respirator. Right on the damn MSD sheets will show anyone who can read what measures to take for protection, to include PPE. Personal Protection Equipment.
Someone please take care of these workers. Ignorant bastards in charge, they should be there handling this shit.
Let's be clear about this, the oil in of itself is a hazard and must be handled accordingly. If anyone knows anybody who can get this message to the assholes in charge please let them know about it. Meanwhile I'll try and contact my Congressman. Not that will do any good.

What's the big deal

Ohh it's a little spill, hell some dawn detergent will clean that right up. I just heard a BP asshole "Suttles" talking on the tube, saying yeah some people have gotten sick and were looking into it...If they need respirators we'll give it to them...
Shades of 911... Just give them any old respirator and they'll get sicker.... the stupid bastards. Ohh kill me now......

Gulf of Mexico oil spill caused by string of human, mechanical errors: reports
Calgary Herald ^ | 5/13/10 | Chris Baltimore

Posted on Sun May 16 08:19:50 2010 by thackney

A cascade of human and mechanical failures likely caused last month's deadly offshore rig explosion and an undersea oil gusher that could be the worst U.S. environmental disaster, according to data gathered by congressional investigators and reviewed by experts.

Around 9:53 p.m. CDT April 20, Swiss-based Transocean Ltd's Deepwater Horizon rig exploded while it was drilling a well a mile beneath the Gulf of Mexico under contract for London-based BP Plc. Eleven rig workers are presumed dead.

Hours before the explosion, set off by flammable methane gas that surged up the drill pipe, forces were already in motion on the drill deck and beneath the ocean surface that opened the door to catastrophe.

"There was a series of failures -- human and mechanical," said Satish Nagarajaiah, professor in civil and mechanical engineering at Rice University in Houston. "This was the perfect storm."

---- According to information from BP, Transocean, and rig contractor Halliburton Co gathered by investigators from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, rig workers pressed ahead to put the finishing touches on the well despite potentially alarming test results that signaled a buildup of gas pressure deep in the well's reservoir.

---- And on the ocean floor, a 450-ton series of valves and pipes called a blowout preventer -- meant to be the last line of defense in the event of a blowout -- was disabled after being significantly modified.

---- "This catastrophe appears to have been caused by a calamitous series of equipment and operational failures," Representative Henry Waxman, chairman of the committee, said at a hearing on the spill Wednesday.

---- "NOT SATISFACTORY"

---- Drilling an oil well deep into the earth involves waging a delicate battle against a torrent of highly pressurized oil and methane gas unleashed when a hydrocarbon reservoir is penetrated.

---- To prevent an uncontrolled release of oil and gas, known as a blowout, the industry has developed multiple systems to hold at bay the extreme pressures within the well.

---- On the Deepwater Horizon, three of those systems -- the blowout preventer, the metal casing within the well and the cement that held it in place -- all likely failed, according to testimony from company officials and data gathered by investigators from the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

---- BP and Transocean made a decision late on April 20 to begin removing mud from within the drill pipe despite pressure tests from within the well that a BP official described as "not satisfactory" and "inconclusive," Waxman said Wednesday.

---- Drilling mud is a mixture of synthetic ingredients that is pumped into the well to exert downward hydrostatic pressure and prevent a column of oil and gas from rushing up the pipe.

---- Earlier in the day, well pressure tests showed an imbalance between the drill pipe and kill and choke lines running from the drill deck to the blowout preventer. The pressure in the drill pipe was 1,400 pounds per square inch (PSI), while the choke and kill lines read zero PSI, Waxman said.

---- "They knew there was something wrong because the pressure in the kill and choke lines was not correct," Nagarajaiah said. "That should have alerted them."

---- But according to Waxman, workers performed additional tests and at 8 p.m. CDT "company officials determined that the additional results justified ending the test and proceeding with well operations."

---- "I'm a little shocked that they proceeded at that point," said Philip Johnson, a petroleum engineering professor at the University of Alabama.

---- "It sounds like they never got an adequate low pressure test and someone decided to go ahead and displace the mud," Johnson said. "That sounds like a pretty serious mistake."

---- Once the well exploded in a green flash, rig workers tried to activate the blowout preventer on the ocean floor, designed as a fail-safe to choke off the well.

---- But officials from Cameron International Corp, which manufactured the device, told committee staff that a key hydraulic system meant to supply emergency power was disabled.

---- And another key device component designed to clamp down around the drill pipe and seal any leak -- known as a variable bore ram -- had been replaced by a useless test ram, according to Representative Bart Stupak, chairman of the the Energy and Commerce Committee's investigations subcommittee.

---- With oil gushing into the sea, BP sent remote robots to the ocean floor to attempt to activate the ram. "An entire day's worth of precious time had been spent engaging rams that closed the wrong way," Stupak said.

I just wanted everyone to know this stuff...

et tu brute "This about the subgrade casings"

Demeur genius A fellow blogger brought up another point. He wanted to know specifications of the Well casing made by Halaburton and used by BP. What I found out was they had no standard. They did opt for a cheaper casing for obvious reasons. The actual specs seem guarded by BP. Even the permit did no specify as far as I can see.

Chris Granger/The Times-Picayune, via Associated Press

Douglas Brown, the Deepwater Horizon’s chief mechanic, testifying. His lawyers, Steve Gordon, seated, and Jeff Seely, conferred.

The concern with the method BP chose, the document said, was that if the cement around the casing pipe did not seal properly, gases could leak all the way to the wellhead, where only a single seal would serve as a barrier.

Using a different type of casing would have provided two barriers, according to the document, which was provided to The New York Times by a Congressional investigator.

Workers from the rig and company officials have said that hours before the explosion, gases were leaking through the cement, which had been set in place by the oil services contractor, Halliburton. Investigators have said these leaks were the likely cause of the explosion.

The approach taken by the company was described as the “best economic case” in the BP document. However, it also carried risks beyond the potential gas leaks, including the possibility that more work would be needed or that there would be delays, the document said.

BP’s decision was “without a doubt a riskier way to go,” said Greg McCormack, director of the Petroleum Extension Service at the University of Texas at Austin. Several other engineers agreed with Mr. McCormack’s assessment of the BP document.

Andrew Gowers, a spokesman for BP, said that there was no industry standard for the casing to be used in deepwater wells and that the approach by the Deepwater Horizon had not been unusual. “BP engineers evaluate various factors for each well to determine the most appropriate casing strategy,” he said.

Junk Shot are we getting into porn...

From PBS

BP's renewed efforts at plugging the flow of oil from its runaway well in the Gulf of Mexico stalled again on Friday, as the company suspended pumping operations for the second time in two days, according to a technician involved with the response effort.

In an operation known as a "junk shot," BP engineers poured pieces of rubber, golf balls and other materials into the crippled blowout preventer, trying to clog the device that sits atop the wellhead. The maneuver was designed to work in conjunction with the continuing "top kill" operation, in which heavy drilling liquids are pumped into the well to counteract the pressure of the gushing oil.

If the efforts succeeded, officials intended to pump cement into the well to seal it. But the company suspended pumping operations at 2:30 a.m. Friday after two junk shot attempts, said the technician, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the efforts.

The suspension of the effort was not announced, and appeared to again contradict statements by company and government officials that suggested the top kill procedure was progressing Friday.

I don't know, I think more and more they have their head up their ass. This is technology? Call in Steve Jobs, by now Apple would have had an App. for this.

Drilling Mud – From Top Kill to Toxic Slurry

Top Kill Operation

The “top kill” procedure currently underway to stop the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico relies on a common drilling industry material: drilling mud – a thick mixture of specific kinds of mud and other ingredients. The Los Angeles Times is reporting this morning that U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen confirms the “top kill” appears to be succeeding. While stopping this unprecedented leak and environmental disaster is paramount, the drilling mud used to perform the top kill, as well as the chemical dispersants used by BP, may also be toxic to the environment.

Drilling mud is used routinely in the oil drilling industry to help flush debris out of the hole during drilling and to help cool the drill bit. In order to adjust the viscosity and other properties of drilling mud, various additives are introduced into the drilling mud. This can result in a toxic milk shake. Common toxins found in drilling muds include: asbestos, lead, barium, arsenic and chromium.

Asbestos was widely used as an asbestos drilling mud additive from the 1960s through the 1980s. Oilfield workers that worked on drilling rigs (both land and offshore) during this timeframe were likely exposed to asbestos drilling mud additives on a regular basis as the material was added into the mud system. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause a wide range of diseases including mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lung, lung cancer and asbestosis.

Stopping the Deep Water Horizon leak is critical to protecting the environment and economy of the Gulf of Mexico. Hopefully, the drilling mud “top kill” procedure will work. Once this disaster has been stopped, however, we need to quickly examine off-shore oil drilling practices and more regulation is needed over drilling procedures – including more regulation of the use and proper disposal of drilling muds.

In talking with Demeur he had suggested the Mud being used might be harmful. He was correct. In over 31 years we have not changed a damn thing on how we do things in drilling for Oil. Sure we can drill deeper but we can't contain or clean up any better
than we did. BP and Obama since he wants to be the one who's responsible has not said shit about the "Mud". Hell most of us Bloggers had to find out about the dispersant's on our own. This is Bullshit. Tell us all and make it the truth. We used to have a right.

Reporter Jon Ralston asked Lowden:

RALSTON: Do you think that Rand Paul was right that the Civil Rights Act should not have extended to private businesses?

LOWDEN: This is what I say. I’m more interested in what we’re doing here in Nevada.

RALSTON: It’s a simple question.

LOWDEN: It’s a simple question, but it’s a gotcha’ question, frankly. I wouldn’t even know Rand Paul if I saw him on the street.

RALSTON: I’m not asking about Rand Paul.

LOWDEN: I haven’t been watching that race.

RALSTON: Do you think the Civil Rights Act should apply to private businesses?

LOWDEN: I think you want to change the subject from what’s really happening. Nobody’s asking that question, Jon.

RALSTON: So you’re not going to answer it?

LOWDEN: No.

Holy shit leadership..almost

President Obama has fired the head of the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service, according to the Associated Press.

The news agency, citing unnamed sources, says Obama will announce later today that Elizabeth Birnbaum has been taken off the job. She's been head of the MMS since July 2009.

Her agency, which grants leases to oil companies and monitors offshore drilling, has come under criticism for lax oversight since the BP well explosion in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20.

Since that report it's been said she resigned. Resigned my Hairy White shriveled ass. She was fired and about time. See Mr.President, that's called leadership. You should try it more often. Next set your sights (aka Sarah Palin) on cowboy Ken Salazar. This prick fat bastard had a year and a half to straighten out MMS. It remained untouched until now.
Genius

Be Presidential

On Friday, Obama will head to Louisiana, the kind of hands-on visit that can lend a boost of support to the region's people — and help the president too.

He last visited on May 2, when he talked of an ongoing, aggressive federal response to "a massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster."

James Carville, the boisterous, Louisiana-raised political pundit from Obama's own party, gave voice Wednesday to those who wanted Obama back sooner.

"I have no idea why they didn't seize this thing," Carville told ABC. "I have no idea of why their attitude is so hands-off here. It's just unbelievable. I hope he sees it now."
Obama has, in fact, been expressing dismay and citing his government's efforts repeatedly. He stood in the Rose Garden almost two weeks ago, in just one example, to share the exasperation felt by people in the Gulf. "And let me tell you," he said then, "it is an anger and frustration that I share as president."

The difficult reality for the public to accept is there is only so much the government can do.

Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the official charged with heading the federal response to the spill, said the government can forcefully oversee the effort, but "BP or the private sector are the only ones that have the means to deal with that problem down there."

That, in turns, leads to constant questions about who is in charge — ones that ultimately turn back on Obama. When it was a Cabinet secretary, Salazar, who appeared to raise the prospect that BP might be replaced if it could not do the job, Allen said to reporters seeking answers: "Replace them with what?"

Thad Allen should just be replaced as well as Cowboy Mike Salazar. Both have not a fucking clue. Take a lesson from Glenn Beck on this one, get out your chalk board and list what the hell is being done and the contingency plans in case. Explain why some things might not work. Call for the Help of the World. Bring in Tankers as they did in other spills around the globe. They troll sucking up the oil in and on the water and process it. A presidential order is in order. Even Movie stars like Keven Costner is getting involved. He funded equipment to process water with oil in it. This is know time to find a balance,a middle of the road answer. I'm not asking much really, Mr.President just do your job and be the leader we elected. A word to the Fucking Righties who are using this for political motives, Fuck you! Thank the stars you people aren't in charge. Nothing would be done and even more wells would be drilled. But of course you have your experts in energy, Sarah Palin. How's that for being fucked up.

IXTOC I
Bahia de Campeche, Mexico 1979-Jun-03

On June 3, 1979, the 2 mile deep exploratory well, IXTOC I, blew out in the Bahia de Campeche, 600 miles south of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. The IXTOC I was being drilled by the SEDCO 135, a semi-submersible platform on lease to Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX). A loss of drilling mud circulation caused the blowout to occur. The oil and gas blowing out of the well ignited, causing the platform to catch fire. The burning platform collapsed into the wellhead area hindering any immediate attempts to control the blowout. PEMEX hired blowout control experts and other spill control experts including Red Adair, Martech International of Houston, and the Mexican diving company, Daivaz. The Martech response included 50 personnel on site, the remotely operated vehicle TREC, and the submersible Pioneer I. The TREC attempted to find a safe approach to the Blowout Preventer (BOP). The approach was complicated by poor visibility and debris on the seafloor including derrick wreckage and 3000 meters of drilling pipe. Divers were eventually able to reach and activate the BOP, but the pressure of the oil and gas caused the valves to begin rupturing. The BOP was reopened to prevent destroying it. Two relief wells were drilled to relieve pressure from the well to allow response personnel to cap it. Norwegian experts were contracted to bring in skimming equipment and containment booms, and to begin cleanup of the spilled oil. The IXTOC I well continued to spill oil at a rate of 10,000 - 30,000 barrels per day until it was finally capped on March 23, 1980. Keyword: Boom, Corexit 9527, skimmer, manual removal, volunteers, blowout, fire, evaporation, blowout preventer, relief well, submers

Holy shit I had forgotten about that. 1979 and the same shit is going on now. The same Technology and the same ineptness. Over 30 years and still the same arguments, drill baby drill. It took over a year to stop that one. One of the things I keep harping on on my blog and in life, to anyone who will listen....We as a Nation,as a people do not learn. Not a damn thing. Same Wars, same lies, same fears and hate. Maybe we don't deserve any better. If we insist on being that ignorant of nature and each other, then FUCK US! Puerto Rican man detained as illegal immigrant!!!
And this was Chicago Kiddies.
I'm sure this could never happen in Arizona...........
Seventy two hours this schmuck was held cause after all it was the beginning of the weekend and all. Who wants to do all that checking of details like a driving license and stuff like his social security number. Hell he looks like he could be an illegal.

Chicago TV station NBCC, an NBC affiliate, reported Monday on the arrest and detainment of a Puerto Rican man suspected of being an illegal immigrant. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens by birth and the island of Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory.

He told the TV station: “I’m pretty sure they know that Puerto Ricans are citizens, but just because of the way I look — I have Mexican features — they pretty much assumed that my papers were fake.”

Although it appears that the arrest incident took place in Chicago, the case brings to mind the ongoing debate over Arizona’s new immigration law, which turns illegal immigration into a state crime and allows local law enforcement agencies to inquire about immigration status – an approach decried by advocates who fear it could lead to profiling of Hispanics and other minority communities.

Ahhh the law suits will be legendary....

I'm just a dumb Fuck

I'm nobody, But I am disgusted with all the shit so far BP has either talked about or tried in stopping the oil in the Gulf. First their was the encasement, Didn't work.
Then the Top hat, What the fuck! Are we going dancing? Then the garbage shot. We wanted to get rid of all them tires anyways. Now were talking of the Magic Mud. Yeah ok!
So I figured my idea is no worse, Years ago when I was young I installed a large pipe in a pool of water. The idea was to connect two existing pipes with this one. On either end it was going into cement, kind of a cement end to the other pipes. This pipe was probably the same size as the one in the gulf. Over a three foot diameter. twenty feet long. So with a large Backhoe I put it in place. Now I had to seal it. I held my breath and submersed into the water with a product called Jet Plug. Jet Plugs claim to fame is it can stop running water. It's used on blocks in a basement with water problems.
So I'm six feet down and as soon as this shit hits water it heats up and seals. The job was done.
Why can't we use a bendy straw(thank you Sarah) to the broken pipe, making sure no water is in the pipe. Send this shit down and into the pipe and when ready make contact with the water. What the hell it's better than a top hat.

To harsh on Obama?

Nuclear policy scholar Christopher Brownfield writes that the White House should punish BP, not offshore drilling, for this ecological nightmare.

If the oil company had been more honest and fair, then perhaps we wouldn’t be dealing with a crazy regime of nuke-seeking ayatollahs today.

Somehow, beyond my wildest expectations of what a public relations team could spin, BP has managed to convince the world that a “relief well” is necessary, and that such a well is the best way for BP to control the situation.

The real reason that BP is drilling this relief well is that they want to have a functioning well for recovering oil from the reservoir before they destroy the leaking well. In other words, BP is hedging its bets that state and federal governments will not allow further drilling after the spill is stopped, so they’ve hyped the necessity of a so-called relief well in order to guarantee their company’s access to the oil field once the crisis ends.

While it’s true that drilling a relief well and pumping concrete into the leaky well can stop the leak, it seems awfully suspicious that BP needs two relief wells to do this job. If BP intends to use these relief wells for future oil recovery, then the motive is all too clear.

And let’s face it: BP knows very well that U.S. law limits their liability to $75 million in damages for causing this ecological Chernobyl. They also know that they’re already on the hook for that full amount and have nothing to lose by waiting a few more weeks for the so-called relief wells to come online.

BP has a long history of pushing things to the political breaking point. Under its former name, the Anglo Iranian Oil Company, BP refused to renegotiate an exploitive concession, pushing the Iranian parliament to select the extreme nationalist Prime Minister, Mohammed Mossadegh, in 1951. Mossadegh then nationalized the oil company’s assets, setting off a cycle of coups and instability that disrupted Iran’s political scene all the way to the Islamic revolution in 1979.

If the oil company had been more honest and fair, then perhaps we wouldn’t be dealing with a crazy regime of nuke-seeking ayatollahs today. As it stands, the company that we now call BP simply changes its name every few decades and hopes that the world will forget its ugly past. Perhaps BP should stand for “Breaking Point.”

Today, BP seems to be pushing things to the breaking point again, and this current example of corporate irresponsibility may push regulators to ban offshore drilling, which would be an unfortunate consequence.

If America bans offshore drilling on account of BP, then a race to the bottom will begin, with more and more oil companies moving to places like Nigeria with lax environmental regulations and perennial oil spills.

What we need instead of a ban on offshore oil drilling is an industry-wide revamping of safety practices, and a cultural change in the management of BP. The management and culture that have kept our navy’s ships and submarines with a perfect record of nuclear safety is a great example for the oil industry to follow.

BP has run this ship aground. America needs more than a bipartisan commission; it needs its commander in chief to take the helm for a while and bring it back safely to harbor.

Some have suggested to me that I'm to emotional over this. I suggest anyone who's not emotional over this disaster of "inept" proportions should re-examine their soul.
Perhaps BP should change their name to GI. ( Greed Indeed)

A little light on the subject

A document obtained by The Daily Beast shows that BP, in a previous fatal disaster, increased worker risk to save money. Are there parallels with the Gulf explosion?

This is a story about the Three Little Pigs. A lot of dead oil workers. And British Petroleum.

From the minute the Deepwater Horizon offshore rig exploded, BP has hewed to a party line: it did everything it could to prevent the April 20 accident that killed 11 men and has been spewing millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico ever since. Some critics have questioned the veracity of that position.

Now The Daily Beast has obtained a document—displayed below—that goes to the heart of BP procedures, demonstrating that before the company’s previous major disaster—at a moment when the oil giant could choose between cost-savings and greater safety—it selected cost-savings. And BP chose to illustrate that choice, without irony, by invoking the classic Three Little Pigs fairy tale.

EXCLUSIVE: This internal BP document shows how the company took deadly risks to save money by opting to build cheaper facilities for workers. The company estimated the value of a worker's life at $10 million.

Three Little Pigs - Outzen

A BP spokesman tells The Daily Beast that the company has “fundamentally changed the culture of BP” since the previous disaster, an explosion at a Texas refinery five years ago. But given that a $500,000 valve might have prevented the massive spill that is now threatening to devastate the Gulf of Mexico, one has to wonder.

Some context. In March 2005, BP’s Texas City Refinery caught fire. The explosion killed 15 workers, injured 170 plant employees and residents of nearby neighborhoods, and rocked buildings 10 miles away. Most of those who died were in trailers next to the isomerization unit, which boosts octane in gasoline, when it blew up.

It just kind of fits into what many of us suspected. Obama has to take control or this will go on forever. First things first get Rid of Cowboy Ken Salazar. This guy is corrupt from the word go. Second fire every last son of a Bitch at MMS. Mineral Management Service. An agency of the Dept of Interior who are just as corrupt as BP.

I love a parade

How metro...

President Obama has signed on to a "don't ask, don't tell" compromise between lawmakers and the Defense Department, the White House announced Monday, an agreement that removes a key obstacle to repealing the military's policy banning gays and lesbians from serving openly in the armed forces.

Obama endorses 'don't ask, don't tell' compromise in Congress
*
'Don't ask, don't tell' votes likely to be close

Obama extends hospital visitation rights to same-sex couples

Under the compromise, finalized in a series of meetings Monday at the White House and on Capitol Hill, lawmakers will vote in the next several days on a repeal of the Clinton-era policy. If it passes, that action would not go into effect until the Pentagon completes a study about its impact on the troops.

In a letter to lawmakers pushing for a legislative repeal, the White House wrote Monday that "such an approach recognizes the critical need to allow our military and their families the full opportunity to inform and shape the implementation process through a thorough understanding of their concerns, insights and suggestions."

Gay rights advocates hailed the White House decision as a "dramatic breakthrough" that they predicted would dismantle the policy once and for all. In a statement, Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese said the announcement "paves the path to fulfill the President's call to end 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' this year and puts us one step closer to removing this stain from the laws of our nation."

The move also injects a highly controversial social issue back into the national conversation, even as lawmakers begin to gear up for their fall reelection campaigns.

Conservative lawmakers have vowed to fight the effort to end the policy. Arizona Sen. John McCain (R), who had previously supported repeal, said at a recent congressional hearing that "Don't Ask" was "imperfect but effective" and that "we should not be seeking to overturn."

Several conservative Democrats in Congress have said they would oppose a repeal unless military leaders made clear that they approved of such a change. That signal has been on hold as the Pentagon completes its study of the ramifications.

At the same time, liberal lawmakers had been pushing for an immediate repeal. The White House endorsement of the compromise is designed to satisfy both concerns and earn their support for a deferred repeal.

About time don't you think, gays have been serving since time began.

Blumenthal apologizes for misstatements on Vietnam
From Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. -- U.S. Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal has apologized in an e-mail for misstatements he made about his military service during the Vietnam War, nearly a week after the controversy erupted.

Blumenthal said in a statement e-mailed to The Hartford Courant late Sunday that he made mistakes and is sorry.

It's the first apology from Blumenthal. He had said he regretted his misstatements and took responsibility for them after The New York Times reported last week that he wrongly said more than once that he served in Vietnam.

He served stateside in the Marine Reserve during Vietnam. He says he unintentionally said he served "in" Vietnam when he meant "during" Vietnam.

Blumenthal, Connecticut's attorney general, received the Democratic nomination for the Senate race Friday.

I've not said to much about this asshole because he disgust me. In an effort to get votes at any cost the son of a bitch flat out lied. He kicked the collective balls of all the brave Men and Women who did serve. People say, but he is at every funeral he can be at of our service personnel. I'm sure even that's for votes. Chris Dodd fucked us again by hand picking this swine. I know there are people out there who tell lies so often that they begin to believe them. Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck are prime examples.
In this case with Blumenthal, it sickens the very core of what we are supposed to be.
Not only do I wish the Dems. would come up with an honest candidate for the seat, but I wish this guy ill. He has practically assured that Linda McMahon will win the Senate seat. McMahon is of wrestling fame WWE owner and chief executive. A corrupt company that pushes drugs on their stars and covers it up. Refuse's to offer health care to it's employee's is in it's wrestlers. Claims the wrestlers are independent contractors. How they get away with that I don't know. In conclusion, fuck Blumenthal and anyone who supports him.

Salazar Talks Tough on BP From the Daily Beast

At what point do we start taking charges that the Gulf oil leak is “Obama’s Katrina” seriously? Interior Secretary Ken Salazar complained on Sunday that BP had missed “deadline after deadline” in trying to battle the oil spill and that the administration—a month after the leak began—is now ready to “push [BP] out of the way.” However, the Coast Guard commander in charge of fighting the leak says only BP has the knowledge to stop it. The oil company’s latest gambit will be to try to inject heavy mud and then cement into the well; the maneuver, known as the “top kill,” has never been attempted at this depth.

From Politcs Daily:
Government regulators have granted seven permits for various types of drilling and five environmental waivers since President Obama announced a moratorium on offshore drilling projects, the New York Times reports. On May 14, in response to the massive oil spill at a BP well in the Gulf of Mexico, Obama announced a halt to new deepwater drilling projects and the end of the full waiver of environmental review BP received for its Deepwater Horizon rig.

Since the well exploded on April 20, the Department of the Interior has granted 19 environmental waivers for gulf drilling projects and 17 permits, most of which were for work similar to what was happening at Deepwater Horizon. At least six of the permits were for sites deeper and more dangerous than where the BP well continues to gush oil into the gulf.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the moratorium was meant to stop permits for new drilling projects, not new work on existing projects. Salazar said his agency has no intention of stopping new oil and gas production in the gulf.

Critics responded that the moratorium is either being openly violated or is too narrowly defined. "We were given the clear impression that these waivers and permits were not being granted," said Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.). "I think the presumption should be that there should be stronger environmental reviews, not weaker."

On Sunday, top administration officials continued to debate the government's next steps in addressing the spill that has now spread into Louisiana's wetlands and, according to Gov. Bobby Jindal, "oiled" 65 miles of the state's coast.

In a press conference in Houston on Sunday, Salazar said he was "angry" that BP had not been more successful at stopping and cleaning up the spill. "If we find they're not doing what they're supposed to be doing, we'll push them out of the way appropriately," he said. Salazar added that he doesn't believe BP knows how to handle the situation.

It's so good the President is trusting but verifying. (snark)

BP and the Ecosystem

From The National Wildlife Federation

The following is a conservative opinion on the effects of the Oil disaster in the Gulf.
I personally think it's effects are going to be ten fold from this hypothesize.

How Does the BP Oil Spill Impact Wildlife and Habitat?

Coastal Louisiana's wetlands account for roughly 40% of wetlands in the continental United States, and sustain a huge variety of wildlife, including many rare, endangered, and threatened species. More than 400 fish and wildlife species rely on coastal Louisiana habitats for food, cover, and breeding.

The oil spill, the remains of which could last months, threatens the health of Lousiana's coastal habitats and the survival of its wildlife both in the short term and the long term.
Effects on Mammals

*

Marine mammals, including West Indian manatees, bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales, and blue whales can come into contact with the oil and inhale harmful fumes when surfacing for air.
*

Terrestrial and semi-aquatic mammals including river otters, mink and swamp rabbits will lose habitat and food sources as oil washes into coastal wetlands.

Brown Pelican
Effects on Birds

*

Egrets, herons, ibises, roseate spoonbills, brown pelicans and Wilson's plovers (to name just a few) can suffer a loss of buoyancy and the ability to keep warm; skin and eye lesions; and ulcers, pneumonia, liver damage, and other life-threatening conditions from ingesting oil.
*

Many ground-nesting shorebirds, including plovers and terns, are at risk of losing their eggs and young.
*

Millions of migratory birds use the Gulf Coast as a critical stopover point after the exhausting flight across the Gulf of Mexico and will face habitat and food shortages as oil washes ashore.

Effects on Fish

*

Yellowfin tuna, blue tuna, blue crabs, sharks, oysters, shrimp and other species lose their ability to fight disease and experience a build-up of contaminants in their bodies over time.
*

Oil exposure is lethal to fish eggs and larvae that are not yet mobile and cannot escape the oil slick.

Thomas McDonald
Effects on Reptiles

*

Reptiles depend on the coast for breeding ground, habitat and food sources. Sea turtles, including the loggerhead and the green turtle, are getting ready to begin their nesting season.

Effects on Habitat

Ninety percent of all the marine species in the Gulf depend on coastal estuaries at some point in their lives, and most of these estuaries are in Louisiana. Louisiana's estuarine habitat includes salt marshes and barrier islands that sit on the edge of Louisiana's coast, and those will be hit first--and hardest--by the oil spill.

*

Oil is harder to remove from the highly organic soils that occur in coastal wetlands and marshes.
*

Oil can kill or reduce growth of marsh grasses, which are a key source of food and cover for wildlife. This vegetation loss will also lead to erosion and contribute to the coast’s already rapid rate of land loss.

Polluted Ecosystem = Polluted Economy

The Gulf Coast states rely heavily on commercial fishing to sustain their local economies:

*

The area affected by the spill is prime spawning ground for fish, shrimp, crabs, and is full of oyster beds.
*

The Gulf region accounts for about one-fifth of total U.S. commercial seafood production and nearly three-quarters of the nation's shrimp output.
*

Louisiana produces 50 percent of the U.S. shrimp crop, 35 percent of the nation's blue claw crab

Is this worth dieing over

With some paraphrasing for brevity, here are all 10 questions on the 2010 Census form:

1. How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment or mobile home on April 1, 2010?
2. Were there any additional people staying here April 1, 2010 that you did not include in Question 1?
3. Is this house, apartment or mobile home owned by you or someone in the house with a mortgage? Owned free and clear? Rented? Occupied without payment of rent?
4. What is your telephone number (number to call if an answer is unclear)?
5. Names of the individuals living in the home.
6. Sex of the individual inhabitants of the home.
7. Ages and dates of birth of the individual inhabitants of the home.
8. Are any the individuals living in the home of Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin?
9. The race of the individual inhabitants of the home.
10. Do any of the individuals live or stay somewhere else?

Why Should You Fill it Out?
What's the single best reason to fill out and mail back the 2010 Census form? Money.
The census count is used by Congress in deciding how to distribute more than $400 billion annually to state, local and tribal governments. The formula is simple: the greater the population your state or city reports, the more federal money it might get.

A Yuba City woman who was shot and killed after she allegedly brandished a gun at a census worker has been identified as Victoria Roger-Vasselin.

Two Yuba City police officers are on administrative leave after they shot and killed Vasselin after she pulled a gun on a Census taker Thursday.

A census worker knocked on the door of a home in the 700 block of Mariner Loop, and Vasselin and Lionel Patterson, 51, answered the door both holding shotguns. The census worker ran away and called police.

When officers arrived, they ordered Vasselin to drop her gun, but she refused. She was shot and killed by officer

There's something happening here, what it is aint exactly clear.

A new way to look at it

From the Daily Kos:

I would argue that at this point in the disaster the die is cast, and it makes little if no difference to BP's ability to operate as a going concern whether the gushing volcano is stopped now or months from now. The sheer magnitude of the lawsuits is going to be staggering--think of the hundreds of billions of dollars in permanently despoiled property alone. All of these claims will ultimately find their way to BP's door, or the door of their excess insurance carriers.

Which is why it makes sense, from the standpoint of defending itself, for BP not to stop the gushing, and in fact to take half-measures which by their very nature will not succeed, yet prolong the appearance of BP "making an effort." The nature of this type of liability litigation practically demands that BP do this to survive.

If BP were able to stop the flow of oil through either its "top hat," "junk shot," or any of the other creative methods being bandied about, the line of attack at trial would be "Why weren't you able to do this sooner?" That's an argument that BP, with all of its hired experts, can never win. The sole question the plaintiff's lawyers will rely on (in addition to their case on causation of the explosion itself) will be "Was the technology available to stop this a month earlier?" The answer is obvious--yes, it was. Of course it was.

"Then, BP, why didn't you employ that method sooner?"

BP will always win in the end.

What a Bitch

Yes, I'm talking about sweet Sarah. On Foxes Chris Wallace show, she had the temerity to claim Obama was in league with BP. She says the liberal biased Media should be looking into Campaign contributions by BP to the Obama Presidency. The guttural spewing of today suggest Obama purposely held off getting involved with the OIL gusher in the Gulf. I will never forgive John McCain for inserting her into our lives.
And of course she supports Randy Dandy Paul and the shit he has been saying. Poor Randy going against that Gotcha Media represented by Rachael Maddow.
To Hell with both of them, Sarah and Dandy.
She needs to get Cancer and Die.

This is from the video Cafe Sarah dude it

Mr. President, are you listening.....

From WGNO ABC26 News

The situation in the gulf is getting so dire for some in the seafood industry, they've thought about committing suicide. Steps to intervene are underway.

Desperation is setting in in Southeast Louisiana. "I spoke to a group of fishermen, mainly Vietnamese Americans and a group of them came up to me and said, they told me that they contemplated suicide because they're in such despair," says Congressman Joseph Cao. He says fishermen are feeling compounded stress on top of post-Katrina troubles. "For some people, this is almost a boiling point where they can no longer handle it and they're going to crack."

"These are grown men that broke down and cried this morning because they don't know what to do and we don't know how long it's going to be," says Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

That's why Cao and organizations like Volunteers of America are working to get mental health workers on the ground to intervene. "They've just recovered as a result of their businesses, their homes and the rebuilding effort and now you have a number of these small businesses, these fishermen, who have to go through this all over again," says Voris Vigee with the Volunteers of America. She says organizations are expediting crisis and mental health counseling among other disaster-related services.

But Voris is confident people will survive this disaster. "I think that those folks are going to thrive even beyond today, tomorrow and beyond the months to come," she says. That's because we've done it before.

To get mental health help, dial 211 to speak to a counselor. On Monday, a claims form office is being set up where people can get information on Medicare, Medicaid, mental health services and more.

It's from 8am - 8 pm at the Alario Center.

So it's come down to this, How proud we should be! Ken Salazar got in trouble for saying he was going to put his boot to the throat of BP. BP should be glad I'm not in charge, I'd have their balls in my pocket.

Shit now their a tag team

From Huffington Post:

Speaking to "Fox News Sunday," the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee said that Paul was being subjected to the same biased media coverage that marked her run for office, before offering her Tea Party-backed candidate a bit of advice.

"One thing we can learn in this lesson that I have learned and Rand Paul is learning now is don't assume that you can engage in a hypothetical discussion about constitutional impacts with a reporter or a media personality who has an agenda, who may be prejudiced before they even get into the interview in regards to what your answer may be," Palin said. "You know, they are looking for the gotcha moment. And that evidently appears to be what they did with Rand Paul, and I'm thankful he clarified his answer about his support for the Civil Rights Act."

This once again illustrates that Sarah Palin, despite her supposed degree in journalism, believes that any real substantive question from a journalist who is not ogling her legs or trying to look down her blouse is engaging in "gotcha journalism". This is why she avoids all REAL reporters like the plague and sticks with the pretend journalists at FAUX News.

And her contention that Rachel Maddow trapped Doctor Paul is absolutely ridiculous. In fact Rachel offered him numerous opportunities to clarify his answer and stop digging himself into a pit, and he simply could not stop making it worse for himself. And his problems were not the result of simply the one interview. He did the same thing to himself over, and over again.

If Rand Paul follows Palin's advice and avoids the media he is finished in national politics. So....go for it Rand!

I guess we now know the Republican Ticket for 2012....

From Crooks and Liars

By Susie Madrak Saturday May 22, 2010 7:00am

Via ProPublica. Despite a steady stream of stories indicating that BP officials were, at the very least, criminally negligent, I just don't believe this administration has the cojones to really punish these bastards. As always, happy to be proven wrong!

Officials at the Environmental Protection Agency are considering whether to bar BP from receiving government contracts, a move that would ultimately cost the company billions in revenue and could end its drilling in federally controlled oil fields.

Over the past 10 years, BP has paid tens of millions of dollars in fines and been implicated in four separate instances of criminal misconduct that could have prompted this far more serious action. Until now, the company's executives and their lawyers have fended off such a penalty by promising that BP would change its ways.

That strategy may no longer work.

Days ago, in an unannounced move, the EPA suspended negotiations with the petroleum giant over whether it would be barred from federal contracts because of the environmental crimes it committed before the spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Officials said they are putting the talks on hold until they learn more about the British company's responsibility for the plume of oil that is spreading across the Gulf.

The EPA said in a statement that, according to its regulations, it can consider banning BP from future contracts after weighing "the frequency and pattern of the incidents, corporate attitude both before and after the incidents, changes in policies, procedures, and practices."

Several former senior EPA debarment attorneys and people close to the BP investigation told ProPublica that means the agency will re-evaluate BP and examine whether the latest incident in the Gulf is evidence of an institutional problem inside BP, a precursor to the action called debarment.

Federal law allows agencies to suspend or bar from government contracts companies that engage in fraudulent, reckless or criminal conduct. The sanctions can be applied to a single facility or an entire corporation. Government agencies have the power to forbid a company to collect any benefit from the federal government in the forms of contracts, land leases, drilling rights, or loans.

The most serious, sweeping kind of suspension is called "discretionary debarment" and it is applied to an entire company. If this were imposed on BP, it would cancel not only the company's contracts to sell fuel to the military but prohibit BP from leasing or renewing drilling leases on federal land. In the worst cast, it could also lead to the cancellation of BP's existing federal leases, worth billions of dollars.

Present and former officials said the crucial question in deciding whether to impose such a sanction is assessing the offending company's culture and approach: Do its executives display an attitude of non-compliance? The law is not intended to punish actions by rogue employees and is focused on making contractor relationships work to the benefit of the government. In its negotiations with EPA officials before the Gulf spill, BP had been insisting that it had made far-reaching changes in its approach to safety and maintenance, and that environmental officials could trust its promises that it would commit no further violations of the law.

And we all see how well that worked out, right?

Well Suzy I'll tell you how it will all work out, BP just like Hallaburtin will always come out on top. To fucking big to Fuck with.

Stupid is as Stupid does

Ahh those Immortal Words spoken by an Icon of the Right Wing. Forest Gump. I posted on this topic before and I feel compelled to again. Texas a state that could be the model for diversification is once more the talk of Those of us who are not mentally challenged.
This has to do with School Books and their right to corrupt the minds of Generations.
Once again the Christian Right has set out to change History. Their claim is that all this time these here books already in use have been biased. (All left wingy and such).
Whatever they find offensive in past or current school books is to be either stricken or changed. Screw Thomas Jefferson, that separation of Church and State shit. They and only they know what Our Founding Fathers were really thinking. Creationism is the way to go.
Martin Luther King was an uppity Negro. The examples of what they changed are numerous but I'm not going to list them all here. What strikes me is "They" are so concerned over the rights of a fetus, yet if a kid is actually born, well fuck em! Kids your on your own!
They don't want you to be Healthy, eat well, have access to a honest education,or in some instances have the rights of an American Citizen. How Christian of them.
A whole Generation of our children will be just like them, ignorant, biased, and hateful!
A bunch of Gump suckers! These future morons will be denied higher learning because they won't pass College entry exams. In a positive light they could always teach at Oral Roberts University or enter Politics.

End of Times

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a directive requiring BP to identify and use a less toxic and more effective dispersant from the list of EPA authorized dispersants.

Dispersants are a chemical used to break up oil into small droplets so that they are more easily degraded.

The directive requires BP to identify a less toxic alternative - to be used both on the surface and under the water at the source of the oil leak - within 24 hours and to begin using the less toxic dispersant within 72 hours of submitting the alternative.

If BP is unable to identify available alternative dispersant products, BP must provide the Coast Guard and EPA with a detailed description of the alternative dispersants investigated, and the reason they believe those products did not meet the required standards.

I guess BP will have to ask what other Chemicals Exxon has in it's little shop of Horrors to deal with untold amounts of OIL.

Oil Dispersant's MSDS sheets

BP is using two type of dispersant's. Corexit 9500 type1
Corexit 9527A type 2
Toxicity
A version of Corexit was widely used after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill and, according to a literature review performed by the group the Alaska Community Action on Toxics, was later linked with health impacts in people including respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood disorders. But the Academy report makes clear that the dispersants used today are less toxic than those used a decade ago.
According to the EPA, Corexit is more toxic than dispersants made by several competitors and less effective in handling southern Louisiana crude.

Update - Oil Spill Dispersants

On May 4, 2010 the Materials Safety Data Sheets for the two dispersants that we had heard were being used on the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster were posted to the official DeepwaterHorizonResponse.com website.

The two products are Corexit 9500 (as previously reported) and also Corexit EC9527A

Corexit 9500 MSDS

To be fair I've heard BP is considering using another product. One less harmful. When I find out what that is be sure I'll post it.
