Drilling Mud – From Top Kill to Toxic Slurry

Top Kill Operation

The “top kill” procedure currently underway to stop the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico relies on a common drilling industry material: drilling mud – a thick mixture of specific kinds of mud and other ingredients. The Los Angeles Times is reporting this morning that U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen confirms the “top kill” appears to be succeeding. While stopping this unprecedented leak and environmental disaster is paramount, the drilling mud used to perform the top kill, as well as the chemical dispersants used by BP, may also be toxic to the environment.

Drilling mud is used routinely in the oil drilling industry to help flush debris out of the hole during drilling and to help cool the drill bit. In order to adjust the viscosity and other properties of drilling mud, various additives are introduced into the drilling mud. This can result in a toxic milk shake. Common toxins found in drilling muds include: asbestos, lead, barium, arsenic and chromium.

Asbestos was widely used as an asbestos drilling mud additive from the 1960s through the 1980s. Oilfield workers that worked on drilling rigs (both land and offshore) during this timeframe were likely exposed to asbestos drilling mud additives on a regular basis as the material was added into the mud system. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause a wide range of diseases including mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lung, lung cancer and asbestosis.

Stopping the Deep Water Horizon leak is critical to protecting the environment and economy of the Gulf of Mexico. Hopefully, the drilling mud “top kill” procedure will work. Once this disaster has been stopped, however, we need to quickly examine off-shore oil drilling practices and more regulation is needed over drilling procedures – including more regulation of the use and proper disposal of drilling muds.

In talking with Demeur he had suggested the Mud being used might be harmful. He was correct. In over 31 years we have not changed a damn thing on how we do things in drilling for Oil. Sure we can drill deeper but we can't contain or clean up any better
than we did. BP and Obama since he wants to be the one who's responsible has not said shit about the "Mud". Hell most of us Bloggers had to find out about the dispersant's on our own. This is Bullshit. Tell us all and make it the truth. We used to have a right.

Good Morning Mr.Tim!

I have been actually keeping a close eye on this shit, even though I havent really mentioned much about it in my posting's, simply because I dont know much of anything about this kind of shit, the only thing I know about oil actually is what weight and filter to buy from the store to change the goddamn oil on my car's! And I even worked at an oil/ lube joint when I was young in Houston of all places, had a roomie who worked on an offshore rig for week's at a time, and still dont know or understand this shit. Yes .... it appear's that Mr.Demeur can be informative on some of these thing's and subject matter, he kinda know's his shit on this, reckon it come's with his job experience. But am I concerned? Shiiiiit .... does a Teddy Bear got cotton ball's? I'm fixin to have to drive down to the coast this weekend, work/ business. I feel even though we havent got hit on the west coast of the Gulf (Mexico and Texas).... one strong tropical storm surge, which is right around the corner this time o' year here .... this shit is gonna be everywhere's, even Texas! I am happy that at least BP "say's" that they wont have no cap on expense .... but that's "yet" to see I reckon, from past experience .... I reckon I dont like to count chick's before the egg's hatch. But frankly dude .... for us down here on the Gulf Coast .... it look's bad, anyway we slice it. They wouldnt get so much slack either if this was California or that coast, they can get away with more down here cause of the good ole boy network shit is all. But what the fuck can anybody do I wonder? We never had to deal with no shit that deep under water before .... I dont even have a suggestion I'm so lost.

Thanx Guy .........

We had the same thing happen about 31 years ago. The same shit their using now they used then. In 31 years we've not progressed. Check on that posting about it I did. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Tim

I read that the other day, and as I said, I couldnt even remember that case, I was probably stoned or having sex or somethin back then. But that may be a shock that they are still usin that ole technologies, but to, you know how some of these folk's are when it come's to updating equipment, they use that shit and technique till they are forced to "spend". These MF's are going to be forced now to rethink, or go outta business!

America needs to be remade. A plan.
Not like what happened since the car was introduced. Sometime we can discuss how we can live without the car.

Obama is suspending all deep water drilling for six months, subject to the findings of the Presidential Commission. If it is to be resumed at all, about which I am most dubious, a concurrent relief well should be required.

TC
That would be something, a relief well on about 3700 wells. Damn gas will be nine dollars a gal. I say good. Maybe that will force our hand.
