Two out of two?

ISRAEL SHOWDOWN
Another Ship Bound for Gaza (from the beast)

Days after a deadly clash between Israeli soldiers and a ship challenging the country's blockade of Gaza, a fresh showdown is on the horizon. An Irish ship, which organizers say carries 550 tons of humanitarian aid, is expected to arrive by late Friday or early Saturday. Ireland has requested that Israel not interfere with the ship. The boat is named Rachel Corrie in honor of an American peace activist who was killed in Gaza in 2003. An Israeli official told CNN, "the Israeli government is offering to receive the ship's cargo, as it has offered other vessels if it docks at [Israel's] Ashdod port. The Israeli government will unload the cargo, screen it, and deliver it to Gaza." Ireland has warned Israel not to be aggressive.
Let's hope relief gets to the people that need it.

Can we at least wait till the Oil stops flowing

This is from the AP:

APNewsBreak: Feds approve new Gulf oil well off La

By MIKE BAKER (AP) – 4 hours ago

Federal regulators approved Wednesday the first new Gulf of Mexico oil well since President Barack Obama lifted a brief ban on drilling in shallow water, even while deepwater projects remain frozen after the massive BP spill.

The Minerals Management Service granted a new drilling permit sought by Bandon Oil and Gas for a site about 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana and 115 feet below the ocean's surface. It's south of Rockefeller State Wildlife Refuge and Game Preserve, far to the west of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that triggered the BP spill.

Obama last week extended a moratorium on wells in deep water like the BP one that blew out a mile below the surface in April and is gushing millions of gallons of oil. But at the same time, the president quietly allowed a three-week-old ban on drilling in shallow water to expire.

"I'm outraged," said Kieran Suckling, executive director for the Tucson, Ariz.,-based Center for Biological Diversity, after a reporter told him of the new permit. "How is it that shallow water drilling suddenly became safe again?"

Bandon Oil and Gas first sought the permit in April shortly after the Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank. The permit was approved Wednesday morning, according to MMS records.

Suckling said the administration was misleading the public by quietly resuming work in shallow waters while acting as if it was taking a tough look at deepwater work.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a news release Sunday that the extended moratorium on deepwater drilling was needed to provide time to implement new safety requirements.

"With the BP oil spill still growing in the Gulf, and investigations and reviews still under way, a six month pause in drilling is needed, appropriate, and prudent," Salazar said. He said the term "deepwater" referred to drilling at depths of 500 feet or greater.

Is it me? I thought we had a time out on Oil wells until a study is performed.

New Products

I know I seem like a one note wonder as of late. Admittedly I'm obsessed with the Oil in the Gulf. The corexit their using is in some ways worse than the crude itself. The only real purpose is for PR. The oil is still there but much of it settles on the sea floor. It just breaks up the oil into droplets. Same technology for over 30 years. I knew there were other answers.. Here one...

Do you think we could at least try it..........

Excuse me?

For weeks I've been hearing from BP and Our Government that the finale solution is going to be these two relief wells. They have also told us July or August is the date when things could be fixed. Swell!
The thing they didn't tell us is they have put on hold the second relief well. Why? Because of cost. Those shut offs are about $500.000 each. So their putting all their eggs in one basket with only one relief well being drilled. I'm an odds kinda guy and can't help think another relief well doubles our odds.
As many of my fellow blogger's wrote, Robert Reich has come out with a plan. A damn good one to boot. Nationalize BP. Have them go into receivership. Take them over as this is a National Emergency. In this way they would be working for us. Not their Board or stock owners. They still are trying everything possible to save money for shareholders. That would go away under Reich's plan. By the way his plan is legal and has be done before in other emergency's.
Something else I've been harping about since the second day of this, where's the tankers to suck up the oil. Under this plan at least five tankers would be made available that are currently still being used to make money. I'm anxious to hear the Presidential response. OBTW stop talking about putting these guys in jail. We got it! Fix the problem and we can go after the culprits later. Concentrate. Oh and on the second relief well..there would then be no question of cost. Bottom line would change to our bottom line. The bottom line that's best for our Nation.Reich

Top Hat? again?

Is this what they meant?????

I don't think it will work... No music for BP=failure

Cheney and BP

Cheney and BP = love means to never have to say your sorry

Think Progress:

Under threat of receivership and criminal investigation for its destruction of the Gulf of Mexico, foreign oil giant BP has hired a former top aide for Vice President Dick Cheney to be their new spokeswoman. Anne Womack-Kolton has been hired to be "head of U.S. media relations."

Now doesn't this beat all... Hey it worked so well for him...
Wonder if she's going to make magic once again
After all, Cheney hasn't done one day behind bars.
I'm told handcuffed, but not behind bars.

1979 Oil disaster in Mexican Gulf.

Volume and extent of spill
From Wikipedia
In the initial stages of the spill, an estimated 30,000 barrels of oil per day were flowing from the well. In July 1979, the pumping of mud into the well reduced the flow to 20,000 barrels per day, and early in August the pumping of nearly 100,000 steel, iron, and lead balls into the well reduced the flow to 10,000 barrels per day. Pemex claimed that half of the released oil burned when it reached the surface, a third of it evaporated, and the rest was contained or dispersed. Mexican authorities also drilled two relief wells into the main well to lower the pressure of the blowout, however the oil continued to flow for three months following the completion of the first relief well.

Pemex contracted Conair Aviation to spray the chemical dispersant Corexit 9527 on the oil. A total of 493 aerial missions were flown, treating 1,100 square miles of oil slick. Dispersants were not used in the U.S. area of the spill because of the dispersant's inability to treat weathered oil. Eventually the on-scene coordinator (OSC) requested that Mexico stop using dispersants north of 25°N.

In Texas, an emphasis was placed on coastal countermeasures protecting the bays and lagoons formed by the barrier islands. Impacts of oil to the barrier island beaches were ranked as second in importance to protecting inlets to the bays and lagoons. This was done with the placement of skimmers and booms. Efforts were concentrated on the Brazos-Santiago Pass, Port Mansfield Channel, Aransas Pass, and Cedar Bayou which during the course of the spill was sealed with sand. Economically and environmentally sensitive barrier island beaches were cleaned daily. Laborers used rakes and shovels to clean beaches rather than heavier equipment which removed too much sand. Ultimately, 71,500 barrels of oil impacted 162 miles of U.S. beaches, and over 10,000 cubic yards of oiled material were removed.

This was called Ixtoc 1. The BP spill will by far be worse. Notice the same dispersants were being used 31 years ago.
